Poverty Rates in Latin America Remain Above Pre-Pandemic

The Social Panorama 2022 report projects that 201 million people (32.1% of the region’s total population) live in situations of poverty, with 82 million (13.1%) of them in extreme poverty. The regional organization calls for urgently addressing the silent crisis in education to avert the risk of a lost generation.

As in past years, ECLAC indicates that the incidence of poverty is greater in some population groups in the region: more than 45% of the child and adolescent population lives in poverty, and the poverty rate of women from 20 to 59 years of age is higher than that of men in all of the region’s countries. Similarly, poverty is considerably higher in the indigenous and Afrodescendent populations.
